BOLD intern

May - August 2020 • Ann Arbor, MI

What I liked

It was a great experience to know what it is like to work for a big tech company on the business side of things. Also, the internship was organized around a support system that encouraged and empowered me to take on additional projects on the side.

What I wish was different

The internship being virtual limited the connection to the Google culture and sometimes it was really hard working 8 hours in a row. Thankfully, my host was super flexible and allowed us to take breaks.

Advice

Meet as many Googlers as you can, you are an intern and they love interns!

What I wish was different

I wish we had gone to the office instead of working virtually from home, but that was beyond anyone's control.

Advice

Resist any hesitation to ask lots of questions.

What I liked

I was given a lot of freedom in my project but also sufficient guidance for me to complete it!

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to go into the office and work in-person, but that's more of a COVID side-effect than anything else.

Advice

Take advantage of what you have access to throughout your internship!

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2020 • Boulder, CO

What I liked

I think that given the situation that forced this internship to be remote, Google did a very good job adapting to provide a good internship experience.

What I wish was different

Aside from wishing that it had been in person, I wish that I had been able to work on my originally assigned project. Due to being remote, I had to have my project switched to an open source project which wasn't directly inline with my interests.

STEP Intern

June - September 2020 • Bellevue, WA

What I liked

Due to covid, the internship was remote. But the intern team still did their best to make the experience as rewarding as possible. My managers and other interns were fantastic and a joy to work with.

What I wish was different

Maybe more information about the benefits and perks available to interns at the company from the start would have been nicer. I kind of had to learn about different opportunities from word of mouth.

Advice

It's an amazing opportunity where you can meet so many brilliant individuals and have so many doors openned for you. If you are fortunate enough to recieve it, don't turn it down!

Applied Machine Learning Student

May - August 2019 • Claremont, CA

What I liked

I loved the small group size and being able to have one-on-one time with the teachers/program managers. The team made sure we had ample time to learn and do projects while gaining a better understanding of machine learning and AI. We had guest speakers from Google come in and we worked on our professional development skills, too. Overall it was an incredible summer with Google! I wish it had been longer!

What I wish was different

One thing I wish was different was to hold a conversation on diversity within the tech field. One thing that stood out to me was how many people of color were in this program- it really made the culture and environment different and more welcoming. I was surprised we didn't have a conversation on the importance of diversity or what that can do to the projects.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is that if you come in with an open mind and a willingness to learn, you will be set! Don't be afraid to ask questions- the team is there to help you and so is the rest of your group!
