Barista

May - October 2018 • Lewis Center, OH

What I liked

Making drinks required a level of interactivity that made the job interesting, which helped me avoid boredom.

What I wish was different

Customers could often be rude and impatient. I wish those kinds of people were more empathetic to how stressful this job could be.

Advice

Having co-workers you enjoy being around makes a tremendous difference. Working an eight hour shift with people who support you is much easier than a four hour shift with people who don't.

What I liked

The job itself is very easy once you get the hang of it. It's fast paced, filled with friendly people, and has great benefits.

What I wish was different

I wish the turnover rate wasn't as high, it was hard to keep consistency because we constantly have new employees coming in.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share with others would be to be open minded, working in the coffee industry can be a tad confusing and frustrating, but once you learn the lingo and get comfortable, you'll be fine!

Business Operations Intern

July - August 2019 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I loved this company's culture. Starbucks was an upbeat and exciting place to work where they not only cared about each cup of coffee they produce but also the community and environment around them. In this I realized the importance of who you work for and also who you work with in a company. before this internship I didn't see myself working in a corporate office but I loved the project I worked on because I was working with Uber Eats in Starbuck's new Delivery program and because I drink Starbucks and use Uber Eats all the time, I was excited to improve their processes and improve their overall customer experience.

What I wish was different

I wish it was longer! I do wish I spoke to more people in the company about how they got to work there and their experience on leaving college. I spoke to a couple people but as a senior in college now I am so interested to hear what people decide to do when they leave college and more specifically ask them if they have any advice for me as I go into my last year! I think with any opportunity you get you should really make the most of it and know that going in because it goes by so fast! So I wish I had thought before I even started what it was I wanted to get out of my internship!

Advice

Ask a million questions! Ask the person you're sitting next to a work, ask people in the field you're interested in, ask someone who just started working at the company and someone who's been there for over 10 years! everyone has a different opinion of the place they are working in and if you're interested in working there in the future it is the best way to see if its a good fit for you. I think it is really valuable to see if the culture matches what you are looking for in a company as ultimately that is the best way for you to succeed!
