Shift Supervisor

February 2021 • Columbia, SC

What I liked

Being a SSV is difficult but rewarding. Learning how to manage a team, communicate with others, and convince your team to trust you was more difficult than I expected. I had to build resiliency and make difficult decisions quickly. I also needed my team to know that I cared, and still do care, about them. I accomplished this by first letting them know that I would respect them first as people and then as Starbucks partners. I learned their individual learning and communication styles as well as small changes I could make to their days to make them enjoy work.

What I wish was different

I would like to focus on the operations aspect of being a SSV more. SSVs perform a variety of interpersonal and managerial tasks, including ordering, inventory, and auditing. I feel very accomplished in the interpersonal aspect of leading a team and would like more time scheduled to focus on operations.

Advice

The most effective way to lead a team is to be vulnerable and honest. Taking the time to know the people you work with is time-consuming and can sometimes be unpleasant. Getting to know a coworker may mean they tell you they want to be led differently than your style. The best leaders are authentically themselves but are also willing to tweak their approach to be more inclusive of their team.

What I liked

Working at Starbucks gave me a good sense of learning how to manage stress, although it was entirely stress the whole shift. I had great co-workers that had each other's backs and a great manager that was understanding that we had lives outside of work and would work with us to plan our schedules.

What I wish was different

I wish there was an emphasis on partner safety between customers and baristas. Many baristas became burnt out due to the emphasis on customer experience and trying to make any accomodation regardless of the item was actually in stock or not. I, in fact, got burnt out due to the reason of other partners calling off during the last hour, which would not only be detrimental to the store, but also to the partners that were actively working. It became a routine, and I wish there would more consequences on this. The emphasis on customer satisfaction over partner health (mind and body) was excessive, and the reason why I became a partner diminished with every shift.

Advice

The one piece of advice I took from this experience is to learn how to say No. The world has been in a state of shock since COVID-19, and one thing the people inhabiting this world has learned was the subject of entitlement and the misuse of policy. Saying No is not detrimental to the customer, if we do not have it in stock, then it is impossible to create that beverage. Suggestions is always another piece of advice that is helpful when serving, but make sure it is tailored or the customer will be upset.

May - August 2021 • Edmond, OK

What I liked

I really loved the people I worked with. For the most part, they were driven, fun, and passionate about doing well no matter what job they were doing. My manager was also, for the most part, patient and dedicated. All of my shift managers were great.

What I wish was different

I wish more training was given - each job needs several days of work, and I constantly made mistakes because I didn't know all the tiny details yet.

Advice

For future baristas, be prepared to work hard and work quickly. Be willing to learn and become friends with your fellow baristas - drama will kill your team, but bonding will make the team work well even during the rush.
