Barista

May 2019 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I enjoyed the people I worked with, they were very nice and were very accommodating when I had questions.

What I wish was different

I often saw some partner baristas being harassed by customers, when that happened I or my coworkers would say something; but it was very weird how comfortable some patrons felt yelling at us for very minute issues.

Advice

Ask questions! There is a lot to learn and no one will (or should) berate you for not understanding something. There are many partners who have been there for years who still ask questions about expiration dates or how a drink is made. It’s okay to not be a walking encyclopedia!

July 2018 • Hopkins, MN

What I liked

Teamwork and customer connection. Communication improvement/efficiency, and learning how to make some of the things I enjoy.

What I wish was different

Corporate can be kind of a sore thumb from time to time depending on your location (but there are still plenty of benefits). A more noticeable effort to extinguish the problem of plastics big and small beyond only complying with laws specific to a region that a shop might be in (regarding compostable products).

Advice

It's a good part-time thing, but still requires a lot of effort. Depending on the location, the effort you have to put in will vary, but locations that offer numerous ordering opportunities for customers have the most effort. Don't go in expecting easy work.
